#OneWord2018: Rejuvenate

#OneWord2018: Rejuvenate

Ah, another fresh start to the new year! What changes will you make for yourself or others? This has been the ultimate question on my mind for the past few weeks.

All over social media, I observed my professional learning community writing various blog posts about their "one word" for the new year. I hesitated writing my own because at the time, I was not sure I could even wrap my brain around one word to define my goals. One day, as I was sitting having a conversation with my grandma, it hit me like a stack of books... REJUVENATE

Over the years, I've had many serious conversations with my grandma. This one, in particular, seemed to be on the brink of solemness. My grandmother knows she is coming near the end of her life. Age does not define the power of the mind. She is still as sharp as a tack. Yet, even though her days may be numbered, she still keeps a glimmer, some may say a sparkle, in her eyes. I sat down and shared with her my accomplishments from the 2017 year. Of course, she was impressed with the things that I had done. But, out of nowhere, she asked me, "Cameron, what did you do for yourself?" I paused and began to think. Did I do something special for myself? Words filtered out of the room and silence flourished. My grandma looked at me as I sat pondering and said, "You know, accomplishments are great, but one must take care of themselves in order to keep accomplishing those aspirations." At that moment, I knew exactly what she meant. I needed the reminder to make sure I take care of myself so I can be my best professional self!

This 2018 year, I am going to, NO... I WILL REJUVENATE my body by doing more things for me! I WILL exercise often to keep a healthy living lifestyle. I WILL learn to cook various foods so I can eat out at restaurants less. I WILL learn how to slow down and pick up a hobby that seems to be in the distant past. This is the year of ME and I intend to REJUVENATE my mind, body, and spirit each and every
day!

My inspiration, Grandma Carter

  1. You have an extremely wise grandma, Cameron! It's so important to do things for yourself that mean a lot to you--that will make you an even better teacher. So "rejuvenate" and soar!
